Epic is working with Amazon Pharmacy, Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drugs and other pharmacy companies to develop a tool that will allow clinicians and patients to compare prescription drug prices directly within its EHR system.
The new feature, called Prescription Marketplace, will allow clinicians and patients at health systems using Epic to compare medication prices across pharmacies before a prescription is sent, according to an Oct. 15 news release from the EHR vendor.
The tool will display pharmacies’ cash prices alongside what patients would pay through their insurance plans, allowing them to determine whether paying cash could be less expensive.
Amazon Pharmacy has worked with Epic since early 2025 to help develop the feature. Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drugs is also working with the company on its development, and executives from Costco and Eli Lilly’s LillyDirect voiced support for the tool in the release.
“This will give patients transparency,” Mark Cuban, co-founder of Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drugs, said in the news release. “If someone’s insurance says a prescription costs $500 but they can buy the exact same drug for $100 at CostPlusDrugs.com, they should know that before they leave the doctor’s office.”
Epic said any pharmacy will be able to share its cash prices with health systems using its EHR, allowing patients to compare options across participating pharmacies.
The new marketplace will build on Epic’s existing Real-Time Prescription Benefit feature, which allows clinicians to view patients’ expected prescription costs under their insurance plans and identify generic alternatives.
According to Epic, that existing feature helped patients save more than $250 million in 2025.
Epic said the new marketplace is intended to address medication affordability as more than 40% of American adults report not taking medications as prescribed because of cost.
The company plans to release Prescription Marketplace in summer 2027.
Representatives from Amazon Pharmacy, Costco and Eli Lilly are also scheduled to join Epic for a panel discussion on medication affordability at the Open@Epic conference in Verona, Wis., on Oct. 21.
