Customer experience No. 1 reason health plans invest in analytics, survey finds

The majority of analytics professionals employed by health plans — 77 percent — expect spending on analytics to increase during the next year, according to a report by accounting and consulting firm Deloitte.

The Deloitte Center for Health Solutions surveyed 45 analytics professionals at health plans with more than 250,000 members about the priorities and challenges of implementing analytics. The center also conducted 15 in-depth interviews with health plan and technology company executives.

Here are the top four business goals driving health plans’ analytics investments.

1. Improving member or customer experience: 56 percent

2. Improving medical costs or affordability: 49 percent

3. Reducing operating costs or inefficiencies: 44 percent

4. Pursuing financial profitability and revenue growth opportunities: 44 percent

Other, less popular, responses included meeting customer needs and requirements (31 percent), driving innovation (31 percent) and reducing regulatory and compliance risk (29 percent). The least common response was collaborating with providers (16 percent).
