Elevance-backed primary care venture names former Optum exec as CEO

Mosaic Health, a national primary care venture between Elevance Health and private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice, has named Doug Wenners as CEO.

Mr. Wenners most recently served as CEO of Grouper, a social fitness benefits platform, from July 2023 through May 2026. Before that, he was CEO of Optum at Home, UnitedHealth Group’s home-based care division, from January 2022 to July 2023. He also founded Prospero Health, a serious illness care provider later acquired by UnitedHealth.

Earlier in his career, Mr. Wenners spent eight years at Anthem, holding senior roles that included president of the company’s East Region. He joins a leadership team at Mosaic that share previous ties to Optum. Executive Chair Clay Richards co-founded naviHealth, a post-acute care management company acquired by Optum in 2020, and CFO Tony Hughes served as naviHealth’s CFO from 2015 to 2021.

Mosaic Health was launched in 2024, bringing together CD&R assets apree health and Millennium Physician Group, as well as CareMore Health, an Elevance subsidiary that provides primary and complex care to Medicare Advantage and Medicaid enrollees. Mosaic serves nearly one million individuals across 19 states for individuals with Medicare, Medicaid, commercial and ACA coverage. Elevance executives have previously projected the venture will generate $4 billion in annual revenue.

“In time, Elevance Health will have full ownership of what we expect will be a leading platform for value-based care delivery and physician enablement at scale,” President and CEO Gail Boudreaux said when Mosaic was announced.
