The Louisiana Department of Health’s Medicaid contract with UnitedHealthcare expired March 31, according to a news release from that day.
The department had set up a special enrollment period from Jan. 15 to Feb. 15, allowing UnitedHealthcare members to transition to a new managed care organization. Of the nearly 280,000 UnitedHealthcare members, over 36,000 selected a plan, the release said. Remaining members were assigned plans through an algorithm that considered keeping families on the same plan and maintaining in-network providers.
The MCOs will honor current care authorizations from UnitedHealthcare for the next 60 days.
Louisiana had extended UnitedHealthcare’s Medicaid contract through March 31, the insurer confirmed to Becker’s in a Dec. 18, 2025, statement.
