4,000 Maryland exchange customers misinformed of CareFirst BCBS coverage auto-renewal

About 4,000 Maryland Health Benefit Exchange customers “were mistakenly notified” of 2026 auto-renewal for CareFirst BCBS coverage, the insurer told Becker’s Feb. 5.

CareFirst attributed the error to a “data synchronization issue” with the marketplace and said these individuals did not receive a bill or pay a premium.

“The issue stemmed from an isolated incident in which enrollment data did not properly align between systems, creating confusion around coverage status for some individuals,” the insurer said in a statement.

The Maryland Health Benefit Exchange oversees Maryland Health Connection, the state’s ACA marketplace. The exchange and CareFirst are working together to address consumers who tried to secure and pay a bill for coverage, the groups said.

“Maryland Health Connection understands how important it is for consumers to have timely access to their health coverage and recognizes that some individuals enrolled in CareFirst plans are experiencing delays in accessing their benefits,” a spokesperson for Maryland Health Connection said. “Consumers who believe they may be impacted are encouraged to contact Maryland Health Connection’s consumer support so their enrollment can be carefully reviewed and, if necessary, escalated for additional assistance.”
