IU Health, UnitedHealthcare Negotiations Stall

Contract negotiations appear to have stalled between Indianapolis-based Indiana University Health and health insurer UnitedHealthcare, according to a report from The Indianapolis Star.

UnitedHealthcare has sent out “notice of termination” mailings to its policyholders informing them to stop seeking care from IU Health unless they’re prepared to face out-of-network rates, according to the report. Meanwhile, IU Health has sent a letter to employers saying the insurer and health system have made limited progress in negotiations, and UnitedHealthcare has been unwilling to consider temporary extensions of the payer-provider contract, which expired Dec. 31.

IU Health has continued to bill UnitedHealthcare patients at in-network rates, according to the report. The conflict affects as many as 400,000 Indiana residents.
