Insurer Fallon Health will join Boston-based Mass General Brigham Health Plan, according to a Jan. 8 joint statement.

“This reflects the outcome of Fallon Health’s thoughtful and intentional process to identify a long-term partner aligned with its mission and strategic vision — one that ensures members continue to receive the care and support they need now and in the years ahead,” the statement said.

The move will expand access, improve care coordination and focus on Medicare and Medicaid communities across Massachusetts, the insurers said. No changes will take place immediately for members.

The nonprofit insurers join a wave of others doing the same. Many regional payers, in particular, have been struggling with operating losses in recent years. In 2021, Fallon Health backed off its commercial business, as well.
