Cigna is joining a handful of other payers in CMS’ health technology “ecosystem,” according to a news release from the company.

The CMS website said participants in the ecosystem agree to align on an interoperability framework for healthcare data and access. A number of technology firms — such as Amazon, Anthropic, Apple, Google and OpenAI — already signed on this summer.

Cigna is also accompanied by Aetna, Elevance Health, Humana and UnitedHealth Group. As part of the initiative, Cigna hopes to hone payer application programming interfaces for data exchange and interoperability required by CMS.

“We are excited to join the CMS health technology ecosystem and look forward to improving access to health information so that individuals have the confidence they deserve to make the best health decisions for themselves and their families,” said Katya Andresen, chief digital and analytics officer at The Cigna Group.
