Business services provider Conduent faced a data breach going into 2025, leaving insurers scrambling.

According to the company, the breach could have revealed members’ names, social security numbers, insurance information and medical data.

Here are three updates on how the breach is affecting insurers, as of late October:

1. Montana’s state auditor and commissioner of securities and insurance is investigating BCBS Montana in the wake of the cyber incident, which could have affected up to 462,000 customers.

2. In its third-quarter earnings report, Conduent reported millions in “direct response costs” relating to the breach. “The Company is working with affected clients to determine next steps as required by federal and state law. […] To the Company’s knowledge, the exfiltrated data has not been released on the dark web or otherwise publicly,” it said.

3. BCBS Montana, Premera Blue Cross and BCBS Texas confirmed they were among the affected clients. Conduent started issuing individual and regulatory notifications in October.
