Payers ranked by Q3 profits

The nation’s largest payers have filed their third-quarter earnings reports, revealing which companies recorded the largest profits for the three months ended Sept. 30. 

1. UnitedHealth Group: $2.3 billion 

Total net income in the third quarter was $2.3 billion. UnitedHealthcare’s total earnings from operations were $1.8 billion. 

2. Cigna Group: $1.9 billion

Total net income in Q3 was nearly $1.9 billion. Cigna Healthcare reported an adjusted operating income of more than $1 billion. 

3. Elevance Health: $1.2 billion 

Total net income in Q3 was nearly $1.2 billion. The insurance division reported a total operating income of $601 million. 

4. Humana: $195 million 

Total net income in Q3 was $195 million. The company’s insurance segment reported an operating income of $251 million. 

5. Molina Healthcare: $79 million

6. CVS Health: $4 billion loss 

CVS recorded a nearly $4 billion loss in Q3. Aetna reported an adjusted operating income of $314 million. 

7. Centene: $6.6 billion loss
