UnitedHealth Group taps AI chief

UnitedHealth Group has named Michael Pencina, PhD, as its chief AI scientist, following his departure from Durham, N.C.-based Duke University and Duke Health.

Dr. Pencina stepped down Sept. 30 as vice dean for data science at Duke University School of Medicine and chief data scientist for Duke Health, according to an Oct. 1 news release from the university.

At Duke, Dr. Pencina co-founded the Coalition for Health AI and led initiatives including Duke AI Health and the Algorithm-Based Clinical Decision Support Oversight program.

His appointment marks a key leadership addition as UnitedHealth expands its use of AI across its businesses.
