Eight percent of Americans were not covered by any kind of health insurance in 2024, remaining at a historic low, according to a September report from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Here are six more things to know:
- The uninsured rate was the same in 2023. In 2013 — prior to the ACA — the uninsured rate was 13.3%.
- The rate of private coverage increased in 2024, reaching 66.1%.
- Hispanic adults ages 19-64 had the highest uninsured rate at 23%, more than three times the rates for non-Hispanic white adults and Asian adults. The uninsured rate for Black adults in this age group increased 1.2 percentage points between 2023 and 2024.
- The South had the highest uninsured rate, at 14.5% for working-age adults and 8.4% for children.
- Uninsured rates in Medicaid expansion states were lower than those in other states.
- The uninsured rate of foreign-born working-age adults was more than double the rate of those who were native born.
