UPMC Health Plan helps drive boosted operating income for hospital system

Pittsburgh-based UPMC recorded an operating income of $111.2 million (1.3% operating margin) in the second quarter of 2025, driven in part by improved underwriting margins in the insurance division, according to its Aug. 28 financial report.

Insurance enrollment revenue was $8.73 billion in the first half of 2025, with the division’s operating income increasing by $319 million during the period.

The health plan’s medical loss ratio was 91% as of June 30, down from a high of 92.3% in December.

As of June 30, the health plan has more than 4.1 million members across employer-sponsored, Medicare Advantage, Medicaid and ACA plans.
