Massachusetts has approved $75.6 million in health insurance rebates for more than 350,000 residents and small businesses.
The rebates are required under the state’s medical loss ratio law, which mandates that insurers spend at least 88% of premiums on medical care and quality improvement in the individual and small group markets.
Five insurers fell short of the requirement on a three-year average: BCBS Massachusetts, Fallon Health, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Mass General Brigham Health Plan and UnitedHealthcare.
In 2024, $51.6 million in rebates were issued.
At the Becker's 5th Annual Fall Payer Issues Roundtable, taking place November 2–3 in Chicago, payer executives and healthcare leaders will come together to discuss value-based care, regulatory changes, cost management strategies and innovations shaping the future of payer-provider collaboration.
