A New York man has been arrested and charged with cyberstalking after allegedly harassing and sending threatening voicemail messages to a family member of murdered UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, federal authorities said Aug. 13.

Between December 4 and 7, 2024, the accused is said to have made multiple calls and left voicemails expressing satisfaction over the killing and stating that Mr. Thompson’s children deserved the same fate.

“The recurrent calls and messages in the days following Brian Thompson’s murder were more than callous and cold-hearted harassment – they were threatening and terrified a family already suffering following the violent death of their loved one,” Christopher Raia, assistant director at the New York FBI office, said in a news release. “The FBI will continue to bring to justice any individual attempting to stalk and harass innocent Americans.”

The charges carry a maximum term of 5 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of up to 3 years.

Mr. Thompson was killed Dec. 4 in New York City, where UnitedHealth Group was hosting its annual investor day conference. The man accused of the murder, Luigi Mangione, has pleaded not guilty to federal murder charges after federal prosecutors said they intend to pursue the death penalty.
