Bon Secours Mercy Health and Cigna Healthcare will be out of network across eight Virginia hospitals on April 1.

Almost all of Cigna’s business with Bon Secours is through employer-sponsored plans that are self-funded. OAP and PPO members will be affected, according to Cigna.

Hospitals affected:

  • Richmond Community Hospital
  • Memorial Regional Medical Center (Mechanicsville)
  • Rappahannock General Hospital (Kilmarnock)
  • St. Francis Medical Center (Midlothian)
  • St. Mary’s Hospital (Richmond)
  • Mary Immaculate Hospital (Newport News)
  • Maryview Medical Center (Portsmouth)
  • Southampton Medical Center (Franklin)

“It is disappointing that Bon Secours Mercy Health is choosing to leave our network on April 1,” a Cigna Healthcare spokesperson told Becker’s. “Bon Secours Mercy Health notified us of their intention to leave unless we agree to their significant rate increases across multiple markets, which would be detrimental to our local customers and their families. We hope that Bon Secours Mercy Health will do what is right for the people of Virginia and continue working with us to reach an affordable agreement.”

“Unfortunately, what Cigna pays our doctors, nurses and caregivers is not adequate to account for the cost of providing safe, quality care,” Bon Secours wrote on its website. “We need all of our payer partners to do their part. By failing to offer a sustainable contract, Cigna may be putting your in-network access to the facilities and providers you know and trust at risk.”

At the Becker's 5th Annual Fall Payer Issues Roundtable, taking place November 2–3 in Chicago, payer executives and healthcare leaders will come together to discuss value-based care, regulatory changes, cost management strategies and innovations shaping the future of payer-provider collaboration.
