13 payer M&A deals in 2025

Several major payer acquisitions have or closed or were announced in 2025. 

13 deals to note: 

  1. Kaiser Permanente is entering the Nevada market through a joint venture with Reno-based Renown Health and will form a new health insurance entity with Renown’s Hometown Health plan.
  2. Humana’s CenterWell has been approved to acquire the assets of The Villages Health, the health system serving The Villages retirement community in Florida.
  3. Cambia Health Solutions and Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota plan to enter a strategic affiliation that would bring the Fargo-based insurer under Cambia’s management while maintaining its local governance and mutual status.
  4. UnitedHealth Group completed its acquisition of home health and hospice provider Amedisys in August.
  5. Priority Health, the insurance arm of Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Corewell Health, will become the governing member of Group Health Cooperative of Eau Claire, a Wisconsin-based health plan with more than 61,000 members.
  6. SCAN Group purchased full ownership of myPlace Health, an integrated care delivery organization serving older adults in their homes through the PACE model, in May.
  7. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is working to sell its AF Group subsidiary, the holding company for multiple companies that provide workers’ compensation and other specialty insurance solutions.
  8. CareSource closed its acquisition of Commonwealth Care Alliance in April. CareSource has also recently purchased New York City-based ElderServe Health; Brookfield, Wis.-based Common Ground Healthcare Cooperative; and plans to purchase Fond du Lac, Wis.-based Lakeland Care.
  9. Cigna completed the sale of its Medicare business to Health Care Service Corp in March. The sale included Cigna’s MA, Medicare Part D and supplemental benefits businesses, and CareAllies, Cigna’s value-based care management subsidiary.
  10. Elevance Health plans to acquire Granular Insurance Company, a stop-loss insurance subsidiary, from Verily, a sister company of Google.
  11. In February, Molina Healthcare closed the acquisition of ConnectiCare, a subsidiary of New York City-based EmblemHealth. Molina paid $350 million for the insurer.
  12. Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Sanford Health and Marshfield (Wis.) Clinic Health System officially merged in January. As part of the merger, each system’s health plan, Sanford Health Plan and Security Health Plan, respectively, will operate under a common management and reporting structure. 
  13. Elevance Health closed its acquisition of Indianapolis-based Indiana University Health’s health plan Dec. 31. The plan serves 19,000 Medicare Advantage members across 36 counties and 9,600 fully insured commercial members through employers. It will operate as part of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Indiana.
