Federal contractors are falling behind diversity requirements: Here’s how payers stacked up

Federal contractors are required to prove their efforts to represent women and people of color in recruitment and advancement — but new public data shows many are falling behind, especially among leadership and management positions, USA Today and Reveal reported April 28.

Federal contractors are required to file reports each year breaking down the race, ethnicity and gender of employees by category. The Labor Department released data on 19,000 federal contractors in April in response to a lawsuit from Reveal. 

Thousands of contractors’ information is yet to be released, pending legal challenges, USA Today reported. 

Here is the breakdown of the U.S. workforce by gender, race and ethnicity as of 2020, the most recent data available: 

Men: 52.74 percent

Women: 47.26 percent

Hispanic: 16.78 percent

White: 63.61 percent

Black: 11.20 percent

Asian: 5.74 percent

American Indian or Alaska Native: 0.53 percent

Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander: 0.16 percent

Two or more races: 1.98 percent

Six payers and health systems with health plans appeared in the top 200 federal contractors by employee size in the data obtained by Reveal. 

Here’s how these payers’ executive and management staff broke down by race, ethnicity and gender: 

Cigna

Men: 42.6 percent

Women: 57.4 percent

Hispanic: 5.5 percent

White: 76.7 percent

Black: 8.7 percent

Asian: 7.3 percent

American Indian or Alaska Native: 0.2 percent

Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander: 0.2 percent

Two or more races: 1.4 percent

Centene

Men: 36.5 percent

Women: 63.5 percent

Hispanic: 12.1 percent

White: 63.3 percent

Black: 15.1 percent

Asian: 3.9 percent

American Indian or Alaska Native: 3.8 percent

Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander: 0.3 percent

Two or more races: 1.5 percent

Men: 31.7 percent

Women: 68.3 percent
