The healthcare giant added 40,000 employees to its payroll last year alone. A bulk of the new hires — 23,000 — came with UnitedHealth’s acquisition of Chilean healthcare company Empresas Banmedica in January 2018. Empresas Banmedica comprises a health plan, hospitals and clinics in Chile, Colombia and Peru.
UnitedHealth operates 13 private hospitals with more than 1,900 beds under the $2.8 billion Empresas Banmedica deal. Empresas Banmedica provides health benefits and healthcare services to 2.1 million people
