Passport, a 20-year managed Medicaid veteran in Kentucky, loses out on $8B contract

Passport Health Plan is among the losers in a bid to help manage Kentucky's $8 billion-a-year Medicaid business, according to the Courier Journal.

The office of Republican Gov. Matt Bevin chose five health insurers to manage the contracts: Aetna Better Health of Kentucky, Humana, WellCare Health Insurance of Kentucky, UnitedHealthcare and Molina Healthcare. The five-year contracts are effective July 1 and cover about 1.2 million Kentuckians.

Passport Health, which has been providing managed care services to Kentucky residents for more than 20 years, and Anthem were the unsuccessful bidders. Both payers will challenge the results, according to the Courier Journal.

Passport and Mr. Bevin's office have been in conflict over rates for months. If Passport doesn't win its appeal, losing the contract could put the insurer out of business, as its main source of revenue comes from managed Medicaid services, according to the report.
