Missouri insurance regulator orders public hearing for Anthem-Cigna deal

The top insurance regulator in Missouri called for a public hearing to evaluate Indianapolis-based Anthem's proposed $54 billion acquisition of Bloomfield, Conn.-based Cigna, reports St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The hearing, scheduled for Nov. 17, will allow Missouri Department of Insurance officials to question representatives from each payer about the transaction and its pending implications.

The department previously ruled to block Hartford, Conn.-based Aetna's proposed $37 billion acquisition of Louisville, Ky.-based Humana, barring the two from selling some plans in Missouri should the transaction succeed.

Both deals face antitrust lawsuits filed by the U.S. Department of Justice in July.
