Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic is creating health insurance products to network with providers nationwide, the health system said Sept. 13.
Mayo Clinic will launch the insurance policies with Minnesota-based health insurer Medica. Medica will administer the health plans and facilitate consumer engagement and customer service for the products.
Under their agreement, Mayo Clinic and Medica will network with other healthcare systems, allowing members to continue in-network access at their local providers. Should a member need treatment for a rare or complex health problem, the providers can use Mayo Clinic as a resource.
Mayo Clinic and Medica have a long-standing relationship, and have created ACO products serving commercial groups and individual markets in Minnesota and Wisconsin. In 2017, Medica acquired Mayo Clinic's third-party administrator business, Mayo Clinic Health Solutions.
Mayo Clinic's staff and other customers will start transitioning to Medica's technology platform and customer service model Jan. 1.
