The Maine House and Senate approved a bill that requires insurance companies to offer fertility care, the Portland Press Herald reported April 18.

The passage of the bill comes after a half-dozen failed attempts over the years, according to the report. Nineteen states require some form of infertility coverage, but Maine is one of only two New England states that does not.

If signed by Gov. Janet Mills, the bill will prohibit insurance companies from implementing waiting periods before an insured member can seek fertility care, according to the Herald. Some states require couples to have tried to conceive for a certain amount of time before payers must cover fertility treatments.
