About 2.3 million uninsured children in the U.S. are eligible for Medicaid and CHIP, but many of their families do not know they are eligible or struggle with enrollment, according to a July 19 HHS news release.

HHS is awarding up to $1.5 million over a three-year period to 36 organizations in 20 states. The recipients are state and local governments, tribal organizations, federal health safety organizations, nonprofits and schools.

Grantees will provide enrollment and renewal assistance to children and their families. For the first time, expectant parents will also be assisted through the program.

The $49 million represents the largest investment HHS has ever made to the Connecting Kids to Coverage program, according to the news release.
