Bill expanding Medicaid for undocumented children clears Connecticut legislature

Connecticut lawmakers passed a bill May 3 that expands Medicaid eligibility to children 12 and under whose parents meet the income criteria, regardless of immigration status, according to the Connecticut Mirror.

The expansion was included in the state's budget, which is heading to Gov. Ned Lamont's desk. If approved, the expanded coverage will go into effect Jan. 1, according to the report. Children who sign up for coverage will be able to keep the insurance through age 19.

Last year, Connecticut lawmakers opened the state's Medicaid program to children 8 and younger, regardless of immigration status, according to the report.

Lawmakers have set aside $400,000 for this year's expansion, the Mirror reported.
