BCBS of North Carolina, UNC Health Alliance say partnership saved patients $40M in 2020

Through Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina's Blue Premier alternative payment model, UNC Health Alliance, a provider network under UNC Health, saved patients $40 million in 2020.

The figure is double the amount the companies said patients saved in 2019, now totaling nearly $60 million in savings over the past two years, according to an Oct. 27 news release shared with Becker's.

UNC Health Alliance achieved a 100 percent quality score for the second year in a row, which it tied to its partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, according to the release.

"We are investing our savings through Blue Premier in innovative ways to help patients and their families, including addressing social barriers that often contribute to poor health," said Mark Gwynne, DO, president of UNC Health Alliance. "We're also investing in our network practices to build care teams around their doctors, adopt enabling technology, and partner with hospitals and communities to provide the best care possible for patients."
