Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City (Mo.) will not sell individual ACA health plans in the payer's 32-county service area in Missouri and Kansas for 2018.
Danette Wilson, president and CEO of BCBSKC, said the payer lost more than $100 million on its individual health plan business through 2016.
"This is unsustainable for our company," Ms. Wilson said. "We have a responsibility to our members and the greater community to remain stable and secure, and the uncertain direction of this market is a barrier to our continued participation."
BCBSKC projects its decision will affect more than 67,000 individuals. The insurer's exit could leave 25 counties without an insurer participating in the ACA exchanges for 2018, according to The Wall Street Journal.
