Anthem loses out on Kentucky Medicaid contract after court ruling

Elevance Health's Anthem BCBS subsidiary will not administer Medicaid benefits in Kentucky, the state's supreme court ruled March 14, the Kentucky Lantern reported.

Anthem had sued after it was not among the five companies chosen for contracts with the state back in 2019, which includes Aetna, Humana, Centene's Wellcare, UnitedHealthcare and Molina. Anthem alleged there were errors in the way the state evaluated and scored proposals. A panel of Kentucky appellate court judges upheld the state's contract awards in 2022.

The case then went to the Kentucky Supreme Court, which ruled 3-3 on the case, meaning the lower court's decision will stand.

The contracts cover 1.5 million enrollees and are collectively worth about $15 billion a year.
