Several states have implemented prior authorization reforms this year, but a majority of payers said state regulations make programs worse, according to a Nov. 14 survey from AHIP.
The health insurance lobby and trade group conducted an industrywide survey on prior authorization practices and gold carding experience of commercial plans between February and April, according to the report. AHIP received responses from 26 plans covering 122 million commercial enrollees.
Seventy-six percent of respondents said state regulations have negatively impacted prior authorization programs.
Michigan, Texas and Pennsylvania have passed laws or implemented rules this year reforming prior authorization regulations in 2022.
