13 states have extended Medicaid postpartum coverage

CMS on April 1 expanded Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program coverage to allow state plans to offer postpartum care for 12 months.

States choosing to extend postpartum coverage must elect this option in both Medicaid and their separate CHIP programs and submit required state plan amendments to CMS. The new  state plan option, part of federal COVID-19 relief, is limited to a five-year period that ends on March 31, 2027.

Thirteen states have implemented the 12-month postpartum coverage extension as of April 28, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation:

4. Maryland

5. Michigan

6. New Jersey

7. New Mexico

8. North Carolina

9. Ohio

10. Pennsylvania 

11. South Carolina

12. Tennessee

13. Virginia
