UnitedHealthcare offers members a free Apple Watch — If they meet daily walking goals

UnitedHealthcare is offering participants in its health rewards program a free version of the Apple Watch with just one catch — members must walk at least 10,000 steps a day, CNBC  reports.

Here are six things to know:

1. In 2015, UnitedHealthcare began offering a program dubbed Motion, which rewards participants for walking more than 10,000 steps each day.

2. Now, UnitedHealthcare members whose employers have opted in to Motion can request an Apple Watch, which they would pay off by meeting certain activity goals.

3. Specifically, participants can earn up to $4 per day to put toward the overall cost of the smartwatch —  a $300 version of the Apple Watch Series 3.

4. The program requirements are threefold:

  • Frequency: 500 steps in seven minutes at least six times per day and spaced one hour apart;
  • Intensity: 3,000 steps in 30 minutes, at least once per day; and
  • Tenacity: At least 10,000 steps per day.

5. Under the program requirements, it would take participants about six months to pay off the device. The program caps rewards at $540 for a six-month time frame.

6. UnitedHealthcare told CNBC that employers who participated in Motion during the first year saved $222 year-over-year per member.
