While star ratings may help ACA exchange health plans identify areas of improvement, it's unclear how much weight consumers will give to the ratings, according to Kaiser Health News.
Star ratings for ACA health plan exchanges are newer than their hospital and Medicare Advantage counterparts. Two years ago, CMS began testing star ratings for ACA insurance exchanges in select states. The measure considers administration of the plan, clinical metrics like preventive screenings, and member satisfaction with physician network and benefits.
For the 2020 plan year, about 80 percent of plans in the federal marketplaces received three or more stars, according to KHN. Only 1 percent got five stars. About a third of health plans don't have a quality rating
When it comes to deciding on a plan, the stars may not matter much for some ACA exchange enrollees, especially those who only have one plan to choose from. Some may pay more attention to other plan features, such as physician network, medication coverage, deductible size and premiums, experts told KHN.
