Whistle-blower lawsuit accusing UnitedHealth of Medicare Advantage fraud dismissed

UnitedHealth Group won a dismissal of a lawsuit accusing the health insurer of Medicare Advantage fraud, according to Reuters.

On June 12, U.S. District Judge Thomas Durkin in Chicago ruled a whistle-blower lawsuit, filed by Medicare Advantage beneficiary Jeffrey Gray, did not sufficiently allege UnitedHealth engaged in a fraudulent scheme. The whistle-blower lawsuit claimed UnitedHealth schemed to inflate its monthly payments from the federal government to administer Medicare Advantage benefits.

The judge, however, said the lawsuit failed to show UnitedHealth's alleged actions were material enough that had the government known about them, it would have affected UnitedHealth's payments.
