UnitedHealthcare is using AI to personalize employer coverage: 3 things to know

More employers are demanding data on how their employees use health benefits, according to Employee Benefit Adviser.

UnitedHealthcare, the nation's largest commercial insurer, is using artificial intelligence to explain why employees choose certain health plans.

Here are three things to know about UnitedHealthcare's Health Plan Manager.

1. The program aggregates information on an employer's employee population to better understand a company's demographics and health plan enrollment.

''[It] also combines claims analytics into its data consumption,'' Craig Hankins, vice president of digital products at UnitedHealthcare, told Employee Benefit Adviser. ''We can look at medical claims, behavioral claims and even pharmacy claims as well.''

2. UnitedHealthcare Health Plan Manager also identifies employee clinical information like health risk assessments and whether employees go to physicians or hospitals to receive care.

3. After the program determines what is affecting an employer's healthcare costs, Mr. Hankins told Employee Benefit Adviser it identifies clinical trend drivers. These trends can inform employers which populations are using costly services.

''Even if it is a matter of doing an email campaign to a set of employees because there is a trend of employees going to freestanding ERs, for example,'' Mr. Hankins said. ''We can identify these opportunities and rapidly act on them to see if it can impact cost.''
