Rural residents benefiting more from enhanced ACA subsidies

ACA premium subsidies included with federal COVID-19 relief are particularly beneficial to those living in rural areas, according to a May 3 report from the Urban Institute.

People living in areas with the highest premiums see the greatest benefit from the subsidies, according to the report. Those living in rural areas are more likely to see higher insurance premiums.

In 34 states, the average premiums in rural areas exceeded those in urban areas, according to the report. On average across all 50 states, ACA premiums are about 10 percent higher in rural areas.

The subsidies are scheduled to end in January 2023, according to the report. Part of the Biden administration's Build Back Better agenda includes extending the subsidies. That plan remains under consideration in Congress.

Rural areas and other areas with high insurance premiums will feel the greatest financial impact if the subsidies expire, according to the report. Insurance coverage in these areas is also likely to fall.
