Regions with the biggest gains in insured rates

The overall insured rate in the U.S. rose between 2019 and 2021, with some cities and counties far outpacing the national average growth in the insured rate of .7 percentage points, according HHS data. 

According to a Jan. 13 report, federal policies like continuous Medicaid enrollment during the public health emergency, increased premium tax credits and enhanced funding for ACA marketplace outreach contributed to the overall decrease in the uninsured rate. 

Here are the 10 geographic areas with the biggest gains in insured rates between 2019 and 2021. 

 

Pinal County (Central) — Florence Town, Eloy (Northeast) and Coolidge Cities, Ariz. 

Uninsured rate 2019: 31.9 percent

Uninsured rate 2021: 21 percent

Percentage point change: 11

 

Greene County — Springfield City (North), Mo. 

Uninsured rate 2019: 24.4 percent

Uninsured rate 2021: 13.5 percent

Percentage point change: 10.8 

 

Buncombe County (Northwest), N.C. 

Uninsured rate 2019: 22 percent

Uninsured rate 2021: 11.2 percent

Percentage point change: 10.8 

 

Kennebec County, Maine 

Uninsured rate 2019: 17.1 percent

Uninsured rate 2021: 6.7 percent

Percentage point change: 10.4 

 

East Texas Council of Governments (Southwest) — Henderson and Anderson Counties 

Uninsured rate 2019: 31.9 percent 

Uninsured rate 2021: 22.3 percent 

Percentage point change: 9.6

 

St. Lucie County (North), Fla. 

Uninsured rate 2019: 27.3 percent 

Uninsured rate 2021: 18 percent 

Percentage point change: 9.4 

 

Northwest New Mexico — Navajo Nation 

Uninsured rate 2019: 26 percent 

Uninsured rate 2021: 16.8 percent

Percentage point change: 9.3 

 

Milwaukee City (South Central), Wis. 

Uninsured rate 2019: 26 percent 

Uninsured rate 2021: 16.7 percent 

Percentage point change: 9.3 

 

Marion County (North), Fla. 

Uninsured rate 2019: 29.9 percent
