Missouri eliminates Medicaid application backlog in wake of intervention

Missouri is no longer seeing a Medicaid application backlog, the state’s social services department director told state lawmakers, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Sept. 14.

The improvement comes after CMS approved a plan to reduce wait times in the state’s expanded Medicaid program in July, according to the report.

The intervention came after beneficiaries were waiting more than 100 days for approval, more than twice the federal 45-day requirement, according to the report.

CMS’ plan called for fast-tracking some applications for coverage, the Post-Dispatch reported Aug. 11. Workers were also encouraged to enroll parents of children in Medicaid. The state’s goal was to meet federal standards by Sept. 30.

The state began enrolling people in its expanded Medicaid program in October 2021 after voters approved the extended coverage in August 2020.
