The commission considered research that supports eliminating the long-term care hospital prospective payment system and reimbursing those facilities through the inpatient prospective payment system, according to an AHA News report. MedPAC also reviewed a CMS proposal to maintain the long-term care hospital payment system but significantly reduce the patient population that qualifies for those reimbursements.
The American Hospital Association opposes both of these approaches because they would lead to lower than appropriate payments for long-term care hospital patients, according to the report.
