How the 'big 5' payers fared in Q3

The country's five largest commercial payers posted strong results for the third quarter of fiscal year 2018.

Here is how Aetna, Anthem, Cigna, Humana and UnitedHealth fared:

1. Aetna's total revenue grew 3 percent in the third quarter of this year compared to the same period in 2017, up from $15 billion to $15.5 billion. After expenses, Aetna's net income grew 19 percent in the third quarter of 2018 to $1 billion. That's compared to $838 million the health insurer posted in the same period of 2017.

2. Anthem's operating revenue grew 4 percent in the third quarter of this year to $23 billion, up from $22.1 billion in the same period a year prior. Including expenses and nonoperating gains, Anthem ended the third quarter of 2018 with $960 million in net income, up 29 percent from $747 million recorded in the same period last year.

3. Cigna posted total revenues of $11.5 billion for the three months ended Sept. 30, up 9 percent compared to the third quarter of 2017. After including expenses and nonoperating gains, Cigna ended the third quarter with net income of $772 million, up nearly 38 percent from $560 million recorded in the same period a year prior.

4. Humana's third quarter revenues were up 7 percent to $14.2 billion, compared to $13.3 billion reported in the same period a year prior. Revenues outpaced expenses, which climbed 6.6 percent year over year to $13.2 billion, up from $12.4 billion in the same period a year prior. Humana ended the three-month period with net income of $644 million, up from $499 million reported in the same period a year prior.

5. UnitedHealth Group grew revenues 12.4 percent year over year to $56.6 billion in the third quarter of this year when compared to the same period last year. Year-to-date, UnitedHealth's profits are up 29 percent to $8.9 billion when compared to the first nine months of 2017, after including expenses.
