Hackensack UMC, UnitedHealth offer joint, spine procedure bundled payments

Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center, a part of Hackensack Meridian Health in Edison, N.J., will offer bundled payments for UnitedHealthcare members receiving knee, hip and spine procedures at the hospital, according to NJ Biz.

Under the agreement, UnitedHealthcare will pay upfront for the procedures, as well pre- and post-surgical care. The hospital one of 46 medical facilities to join UnitedHealthcare's Spine and Joint Solution bundled payment program.

UnitedHealthcare's bundled payment program has generated about $18 million in employer savings across 115 employers, the health insurer said in May. The health insurer's Spine and Joint Solution led to a 22 percent reduction in hospital readmissions and a 17 percent decrease in complications for patients undergoing joint replacement surgeries, when compared to facilities not participating in the program.
