Democrats push to extend ACA premium subsidies

A group of 26 House Democrats are asking Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to fast-track legislation to extend ACA premium subsidies, Politico reported May 23.

About 13 million low-income Americans will see their premiums rise without an extension, according to the report. The subsidies were included with federal coronavirus relief that is set to expire at the end of the year.

“These concerns are not hypothetical. Earlier this month, insurers in Vermont became the first

state to file proposed premiums for 2023 and are seeking approval of premium increases as large as 24.2 percent over 2022 rates,” the Democrats said in a letter to the congressional leaders.

The move, intended to draw attention to the subsidies’ expiration before voters head to the polls this fall, was spearheaded by Rep. Lauren Underwood, D-Ill., according to the report.

Health insurer lobby and trade group America’s Health Insurance Plans asked lawmakers last month to make the subsidies permanent.
