Asked to rate their PBMs on a scale from one to 10, the average response among plan sponsors was 7.8, a decline from 8.2 in 2021.
The survey, published Oct. 19, included 236 benefits leaders, surveyed in May and June 2022.
Here are five more findings to know from the survey:
- The majority of respondents were satisfied with their PBMs’ level of transparency — 23 percent said they were very satisfied, and 36 percent said they were somewhat satisfied.
- Employer plan sponsors were more satisfied with PBMs than health plan sponsors. Employers rated their satisfaction with delivery of services, staffing and management of drug trends higher than health plans did.
- Smaller PBMs scored higher in overall satisfaction and likelihood plan managers would recommend their PBM provider to a colleague.
- Plan sponsors who started using their current PBM in 2016 or earlier reported higher levels of satisfaction.
- Express Scripts and OptumRx received the highest overall satisfaction ratings in the survey.
