CMS offers $22M to state insurance regulators for consumer protection efforts

CMS has made available $22 million in funding to help state insurance regulators enact consumer protection controls enforced under the Affordable Care Act.

The funding will offer new opportunities for state regulators to design strategies around protecting consumers on government insurance exchanges. The $22 million is part of $250 million in state review grants CMS will give regulators to improve how they review insurers’ premium rate increase proposals.

“These additional grants will continue our partnership with state departments of insurance to help support their efforts to ensure their laws, regulations and procedures are in line with federal requirements and that states are able to effectively oversee and enforce these provisions under the ACA that provide important consumer protections,” Kevin Counihan, CEO of the Health Marketplace, said in a prepared statement.
