CMS awards 13 states $452 million in reinsurance waiver funding

CMS is distributing $452 million to 13 states through reinsurance waivers to support affordable coverage.

According to a Sept. 7 HHS release, states that use reinsurance waivers provide more affordable coverage to residents by offering to pay insurers for claims that would otherwise be paid by consumers through higher premiums.

Eligible states will receive between $2.5 million and $139 million depending on the size and scope of their reinsurance programs.

The pass-through funding is provided through Section 1332 waivers and comes from the American Rescue Plan.
