In most regions in the U.S., Medicare dollars for inpatient services are concentrated among just a few hospital systems, an analysis from the Commonwealth Foundation found.
The analysis, published Jan. 4, compared Medicare spending data for the 306 hospital referral regions in the United States. Researchers found that two hospital systems accounted for more than half of Medicare spending in 258 hospital referral regions and more than two-thirds of spending in 110 regions.
Here are the 10 regions with the most concentrated Medicare inpatient spending:
- Bloomington, Ill.
- Bend, Ore.
- St. Joseph, Mich.
- Muskegon, Mich.
- Wausau, Wis.
- Albany, Ga.
- Owensboro, Ky.
- Panama City, Fla.
- San Angelo, Texas
- Gainesville, Fla.
