Centene adds 1.4M members during open enrollment 2018

As of Jan. 7, Centene Corp. recorded 1.4 million sign-ups for its health plans during the most recent ACA open enrollment period, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Centene CEO Michael Neidorff told attendees at the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference Monday, "The growth in the exchange has been so dramatic. ... We had planned on incremental growth, but not that much."

The enrollment reflects a growth of at least 400,000 from the third quarter ended Sept. 30, 2017, Evercore ISI analyst Michael Newshel told the publication.

Mr. Newshel also said while Centene's numbers are likely to raise the insurer's forecast, taking on so many members in the "volatile" individual market puts Centene at risk where other payers have pulled back.
