CareFirst BCBS revises rate requests in Maryland

Baltimore-based CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield upped its requested premium rate increases for 2017 individual plans from 12 percent for HMO plans and 15.3 percent for PPO plans to 27.8 percent and 36.6 percent, respectively.

The Maryland Insurance Administration will finalize 2017 individual and small group premium rates after CareFirst's revised requests and public comment is considered. A second public hearing will be held Aug. 15.

Other notable requested rate increases for individual plans in Maryland include Bloomfield, Conn.-based Cigna's 30 percent, Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Foundation Health Plan's 25 percent and Baltimore-based Evergreen Health's 8 percent.
