BCBS of Texas reaches settlement in Americans with Disabilities Act lawsuit

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas agreed to pay a $75,000 settlement after a deaf job applicant accused the health insurer of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act, according to the Dallas Morning News.

The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which accused BCBS of Texas of violating the ADA, said the insurer settled the lawsuit March 20. The commission filed the lawsuit after BCBS of Texas declined to settle the case outside of court.

The lawsuit accused BCBS of Texas of not accommodating a deaf applicant who claimed the insurer's online application was inaccessible. According to the allegations, the insurer stopped communicating with the applicant after accommodations were requested, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Blue Cross did not immediately respond to the publication's request for comment.
