BCBS of Georgia accused of fraudulently overcharging customers

Former Georgia Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine has filed a lawsuit claiming Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia overcharged consumers for their premiums at the same time it was cutting payments to physicians who were outside of its coverage network, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The lawsuit, which was filed on behalf of 11 surgical centers and their patients and a claims filing service, alleges the health insurer cut the payment rates for out-of-network physicians but kept charging customers as if the company was still making the higher payouts, according to the report.

Mr. Oxendine is seeking class-action status for his lawsuit.
