Over the past five years, retail health clinics have increased from 12.2 visits per 1,000 members to 24 visits per 1,000 members. BCBS said the upward trend reflected an increase in consumers who gained employer-based insurance.

In addition, BCBS found in 2015, the rate in retail clinic visits per 1,000 members was 72 percent higher for women than the rate for men.

BCBS said visits to retail health clinics has lagged among individually insured members since the ACA marketplaces began offering coverage in 2014, according to the data.
